Corrections & responses
How to challenge a claim, supply evidence or request a correction.
We welcome evidence that challenges our reporting. A correction request does not need to agree with an article’s conclusion to receive consideration.
Report an error
Email [email protected] with the article title or link, the passage you are challenging, and the evidence supporting your correction. For a broken citation, include the source number and an alternative location if you have one.
Distinguish a factual error from a disagreement with our interpretation where possible. Both can matter, but they call for different responses.
How requests are assessed
We check the disputed passage against the underlying source, examine any new evidence and consider whether the article’s wording or conclusion needs to change. An organisation’s denial or a reader’s complaint is part of the record to assess, rather than proof by itself.
People and organisations discussed in an article may submit a response through the same address. Relevant responses should be represented fairly and assessed alongside the evidence. We do not promise to publish correspondence in full.
Make substantive changes visible
A correction that changes a material fact or the strength of an argument should carry a dated note on the affected article, explaining the error and its effect. A new development should be identified as an update. Minor spelling or formatting fixes need not be presented as changes to the research findings.
If a central claim can no longer be supported, changing a few words is insufficient. The affected argument should be withdrawn or clearly revised, with an explanation readers can find.
Right of reply
None received.
Each article has a right-of-reply section. Relevant responses and material corrections will be recorded there with dates. We may summarise or edit a response for length, relevance, privacy or unlawful content, while preserving its substance and identifying it as a response.
Sending supporting material
Ordinary email is not a secure submission channel. Send relevant public documents or links where possible and avoid unnecessary personal information about yourself or others. If material needs special handling, describe that need before sending it.
